Elizabethtown, New Mexico Territory, circa 1875

Neither photographer or location identified on photograph.  Dimensions of cabinet card: 8 inches by 5 inches.  Condition: very good plus to near fine.

Elizabethtown was founded in the summer of 1867 after the discovery of copper ore.  Not long after, gold was discovered and the area around Elizabethtown became a magnet of industry.

Wyman, photographer.  Curiosity Store: Indian Pottery, Blankets, Bows, Arrows and Antiquities, Specimen Taxidermy and Leather Work from Acoma, Laguna, Isleta, the Navajos and Sioux Tesuque.  Grand Union Block, 110 Commercial Street, Trinidad, Colorado.  Dimensions: 8 inches by 5 inches.  Condition: very good plus; several light stains on photographic image; some light chipping to manila mount.

Pueblo of Isleta is located in the Rio Grande Valley, 15 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico, established in the 1300s and covering nearly 329 square miles.

Two Native Americans posing in photographer's studio with rifles.  No photographer or location identified.  Print has two points of damage: top center area; and, lower right-hand margin.  Neither point seriously impacts this circa 1890s image.  Dimensions: 8 inches by 5 inches.  Manila card and format reminiscent of photographic work done by Horace S. Poley; however, this is only a logical attribution, as this image was among a group of Native American photographs by Poley.  Tones are rich; detail in clear and concise.

By W. W. H. Davis.  New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1857, 1st edition.  Original cloth; spine professionally reinforced; yellow endpapers; 432 pages; all 13 plates present.  Pages are clean and fresh; no foxing; rubbing to endpapers.  Overall condition: very good plus.

From PREFACE: "This volume is mainly written from a diary the author kept during a residence of two and half years in New Mexico, and the matters contained in it are either drawn from careful personal observation, or other reliable sources.  The historical portions are almost wholly obtained from official records in the office of the Secretary of the Territory at Santa Fe, and may be relied upon as correct ...."

  "... The beautiful drawings that adorn the work were executed by Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Eaton, U.S.A., on duty in that territory, and F.A. Percy, Esg., of El Paso, Texas, to whom I am much indebted ...."
